Fire Up That Metabolism

I’m all about simple lifestyle changes that improve overall health. One simple way to start your day off right is to eat breakfast. Mom was right. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but she may not have known why.

Haylie Pomroy, nutritionist and author of New York Times Bestseller The Fast Metabolsim Diet, encourages her clients to eat within 30 minutes of waking. She explains in her newest book, Fast Metabolsim Food Rx the complex biological reasons why eating so quickly after rising in the morning is so important. Some of it’s a little over my head, but she brings up some interesting points about the amount of energy and sophisticated body systems our God uses to wake His little sleeping giants. Food fuels these metabolic processes and if we wait until lunchtime to eat, we’re literally starving our bodies and encouraging it to behave in a fight or flight mode.

Some of us have programmed our bodies to wait hours to eat after starting our day. I get it, we’re super busy, and if you’re like me, you probably told yourself that it’s good to skip a meal so that you can save those calories for later.

When we start our day with healthy protein and other food-based nutrients, we are decreasing our chances of overeating at lunchtime, which then makes us feel sluggish by 3pm, so of course, we have to tap into our stash of Thin Mints, right?

I have found it easier to eat within 30 minutes of waking if I drink a smoothie. I use a shaker cup, 8 to 12 ounces of unsweetened vanilla almond milk (organic of course) and my favorite smoothie powder mix. These days, I’m into my custom smoothie mix from WellPath which jumpstarts my day with 18 grams of protein, but I also enjoy Vega Proteins & Greens.

Metabolism and digestion are some of my favorite wellness topics. In particular, I talk to so many women who suffer in silence with their bathroom issues. I know I have, but I’ve found that when I drink a smoothie in the morning, especially a plant-based formula with probiotics and enzymes, it can dramatically improve your gut.

Gut health is so important. If our gut (stomach, intestines, colon, etc) are not healthy, it can compromise our immune and nervous systems, as well as our hormonal balance.

Eat breakfast first thing in the morning and fire up that metabolism!
