Why I Love Coconut Oil

Lately, I’ve fallen back in love with coconut oil. You know how it’s so tempting to try new beauty products and experiment with the latest trends? I’m guilty of that, but was recently reminded about using coconut oil on my skin, and now, I’m in love again.

The benefits of coconut oil on hair are pretty straightforward, but after using coconut oil on my face before bed the last several nights, I started seeing some nice results.

For starters, coconut oil is packed with vitamin E, proteins, lauric, capric and caprylic acids. Typically, we think of “acid” as a bad thing, but the acids in coconut oil are very good for us – both internally and externally – but be sure to use organic, unrefined coconut oil.

Lauric, capric and caprylic acids are medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) and make up slightly more than half of coconut oil’s natural goodness. These MCFAs give coconut oil its antiviral, antimicrobial and antifungal properties. When we ingest coconut oil, our body benefits too. There is some evidence that lauric acid can help lower bad cholesterol and increase the “good” cholesterol. Also, because coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid, our liver processes it immediately and converts into energy instead of storing it as fat.

I know some people who eat a tablespoon of coconut oil a day. I personally find that difficult to do, so I like to add a little to my morning coffee. That may sound weird, but it gives a nice richness and creaminess along with a small boost of health benefits.

Because coconut oil is naturally anti-microbial it can fight bacteria accumulation on our skin. This is a big deal if you’re like me and prone to breakouts. Trapped oil under your skin and bacteria are not a good combo.

I find that exfoliating regularly and then slathering a thin layer of coconut oil on my face before I go to bed are causing dark spots to be less noticeable and seem to be keeping new breakouts at bay.

While I really like Origins Modern Friction as a weekly exfoliator, I also use this little handy silicone facial scrubber for quick and gentle daily exfoliation.

  1. I use coconut oil every night after washing and exfoliating my face. I also like to swish or “pull” the oil almost like a mouth wash. You can do this for 20 minutes (at minimum)- Not only is it great for fighting bacteria but it’s also great at teeth whitening! Tip: Do not spit it back into your sink. Oil and sinks just do not get along 🙂

    • Thanks Brittany – that is a good idea! Although I have not used coconut oil for “swishing/pulling,” I did try this product by Banyan Botanicals I’ll admit the texture was “different.” So, may I ask, if you can’t spit it in the sink….where do you recommend? LOL!

  2. We use coconut oil as make up remover! I put some in the palm of my left hand use my fingers on the right to mix a few seconds until it melts then rub it on my eyes first (closed) & use a cotton square to wipe the make up off my eyes then rub the oil all over my face, wipe off, wash and moisturize! Easy, healthy for skin and more cost effective than harsh chemical removers.

  3. Thank you for enlightening us on the health benefits of coconut oil. I love to use it as a face and neck moisturizer. While my face is damp, I rub in the oil, massage my face, earlobes and neck before lightly wiping off the excess with a towel. I feel the dampness allows the oil to better absorb in my skin. It also cuts down on the shine.
